Our work

Together we are improving trails across the New River Valley.

Our grass-roots beginning

PCTC was first started when a small group of local outdoor enthusiasts saw a growing need for trail maintenance and construction in our local community.

With their vision at top of mind, the small group banded together and began maintaining the neglected and eroded trails in the Pandapas Pond Trail System.

Over the past 8 years, the nonprofit has continued to make its mark in the local community through the continuation of successful projects and partnerships with the USFS, New River Valley Bicycle Association, New River Land Trust, and more.

Today, these dedicated volunteers still pick up shovels, rally volunteers, and work with local organizations to carry out our mission; create, maintain and improve multi-use trails in the NRV through coordinated volunteer efforts.

How we work

Poverty Creek Trails Coalition was formed to provide a local service that did not exist previously. We help community stakeholders by:

  • Designing new trails through trail scoping and design, trail layouts and surveying. Building new trails by hand or assisting machine built trails.

  • Maintaining existing trails by trimming back brush, keeping trails clear of trees and brush, building or rebuilding drains and rerouting trails when required.

PCTC is a volunteer-based nonprofit and therefore we rely heavily on volunteer hours to complete all of the above.

Paving the future path

We’re constantly maintaining existing trails while “paving” the way for new trails. This year, our board members are focused on:

  • Working with stakeholders to develop a 10-year plan for the maintenance and new trail development in the Poverty Creek Trail System.

  • Moving forward with the Brush Mountain Properties Concept Plan (starting connector trails from Gateway to Brush Mountain Property 2).

  • Building at least 7 miles of new bike-oriented trails on Brush Mountain Property 2.

  • Holding trail workdays and would love an extra hand!

  • Hosting events throughout the remainder of the year.

As always, we strive to create a sense of community ownership to care for our beloved trail networks for current and future generations.
